Riggs Partners Unveils Refurbished WECO Sign

COLUMBIA, S.C. (January 11, 2023) — Riggs Partners, as part of a public-private partnership with the City of West Columbia, celebrated the lighting of the refurbished WECO sign on Tuesday, January 10, 2023.

More than 50 attendees were on hand to celebrate the sign’s lighting for the first time in more than two decades.

With the recent revitalization and redevelopment of West Columbia, Riggs Partners and the City of West Columbia came together to revitalize the sign and solidify its place as a historic piece of public art and landmark of West Columbia.

“We are thrilled to bring the WECO sign back to its former glory,” said Teresa Coles, president of Riggs Partners. “The sign is iconic, given both its retro design and as a fixture within West Columbia. We’ve wanted to restore this community treasure since we moved our office to West Columbia in 2007.”

The sign was refurbished locally at Flagship Signs and now includes a renovated structure, new lighting and the words “West Columbia, South Carolina, 29169” in the existing lightboxes to ensure that the sign celebrates the area.

“It’s a piece of history that has been restored, bringing the past to the present,” said Tem Miles, mayor of the City of West Columbia. “The refurbishment of the sign fit into plans adopted by the City of West Columbia’s City Council in 2018 to redevelop and revitalize the city.” To learn more about this project and the history of the sign, visit the WECO webpage.
